Stump Grinding
Most tree removals leave a stump unless grinding is in the estimate. A stump grinder chews the stump and main roots into wood chips below ground level, so you can lay sod, replant or pave over the spot.
What to expect
The crew grinds the stump down below grade. How deep depends on the machine and what you plan to do next. Laying sod needs less depth than planting a new tree in the same spot, so tell them your plans. Grinding leaves a pile of chips and soil; ask whether they'll haul it away, backfill the hole or leave it as mulch.
Utilities come first
Stumps often sit near irrigation lines, sprinkler heads and buried utilities. Florida's call-before-you-dig center, Sunshine 811, marks public underground lines; ask the crew whether they'll arrange a locate before grinding. Mark your private irrigation and lighting lines too.
Palm stumps and surface roots
Palm stumps are fibrous and usually easier to grind than hardwood stumps. Big ficus and oak stumps often have long surface roots that need extra grinding. Mention the tree type and stump size when you request a quote.
